This category of posts suddenly appeared in my mind while I was having breakfast this morning. We all know that a lot of artists, musicians and bands grow up and change their styles. Sometimes, they change because they need to; other time they do it only because their need to be on the magazines. So, I present to you a new post category: Before & After! Please, feel free to give your opinion and suggestion! ( :
Avril Lavigne. I was almost killing myself while I was trying to find a good person to start these posts, but how could I forget about the girl who inspired my sweet rebel fase? When Avril was on the top of the charts with Sk8er Boi, everyone just freaked out with this girl style and attitude. She hated everything that was futile, like women who wore tiny clothes to be famous. Avril loved those skater pants, a lot of bracelets and, of course, those ties. Not to mention the caps, the Converse and that AWESOME hair. And what can I say about the Let Go songs? I mean, Complicated is really cool. I don't know, those addictive rhythms, a little bit of punk rock, just like Simple Plan did on their debut album, were so amazing! By the way, do you guys remember the music video for He Wasn't? Wasn't it JUST GREAT? She was badass (At least, that's what I thought at that time).
Avril started to change a little bit when Under My Skin was released, in 2004. The brown hair became blonde, but the songs remained in the same style of Let Go. But Avril's biggest alteration came out with the release of The Best Damn Thing's first single, Girlfriend. High heels, short skirt, coreography, pink hair, pink microphone, pink, pink, pink. The skater girl was officially gone, and Avril started to... grow up. Please, don't get me wrong! The pink hair totally fits her, and, for God's sake, who am I to judge someone? I'm just narrating the facts the way I see them.
I can't tell you that I'm not shocked with this new album, Goodbye Lullaby. I know, she's growing up, she's discovering who she really is, she's trying to change now that her marriage is over, but, c'mon, Avril became everything that she used to hate. The songs, well, they might be addictive (last summer I couldn't take What The Hell off of my head), but I don't know, the lyrics don't bring me a deep sensation like I still have when I'm listening to I'm With You.
Seems like Avril will never look ugly - each day she looks even more stunning! Her voice, well, is gorgeous and her carreer has a long way to travel. The only thing I really think about this whole evolution is that don't want her to become a singer without identity. I think I'll never get sick of her first two albums, because they are GREAT. The third one, well, I can swallow it, but I must say goodbye to the Lullaby. Avril looks amazing now, but I miss so much the "old Avril"...
